Social Orphanage Nepal

Naya Bazaar, Kathmandu, Nepal

Social Orphanage Nepal was established 5 years back to provide a homely and loving environment for children who have nowhere to go. The Orphanage occupies the ground floor of a 3 storey building in Naya Bazaar, Kathmandu. The Orphanage is centrally located with market and the schools for the children only a short distance away. The space though inside the Orphanage is crowded. The children live in a cramped space and there isn’t place for them to play. The orphanage hopes to move to a more spacious location in near future.

At present, the Orphanage is looking after 13 orphaned and destitute children. The Orphanage expects to turn these and more children into mature adults with skills on their hands to survive for the future. The Orphanage also hopes that when they are an adult, they’ll work to fund the Orphanage’s operation.

Why Social Orphanage Nepal needs Volunteers

Social Orphanage Nepal survives on a shoestring. Every day is a struggle to feed the children, pay rent and give children decent clothes to wear. Any donation that reaches the Orphanage comes from abroad as local people are generally too poor to contribute. Volunteers and well wishers regularly supply just about enough money to run the money. The Orphanage really looks forward to accommodating the volunteers as that would mean the Orphanage receiving your program fee. Even though the fee might appear as a small amount to you, you’d be surprised to know what the Orphanage can do with the money. They are better able to feed the children and buy new clothes with your program fee.

You’ll also work in the Orphanage to teach and help the children and provide them with much needed love. This will greatly ease the burden on the existing staffs that are always overstretched. Help them with kitchen chores also if you’re fond of cooking and want to learn Nepali cooking. You can also clean the Orphanage.

All this means Social Orphanage Nepal can function smoothly and the children will feel loved and cared.

Meal/Accommodation/Support

While working in Social Orphanage Nepal, you will stay with a host family about two hundreds meters away from the Orphanage. The room is spacious, safe and clean. The host family has hosted volunteers before and is able to communicate in English. We will enjoy 3 local meals a day made locally. A typical Nepali meal is dal (lentil soup), rice, vegetable curry and pickles.

The director of the orphanage will supervise you during your stay. The director will advise you of your job responsibility. If you need any other help, contact our Kathmandu office.

Daily Life of Volunteers in Social Orphanage Nepal

Volunteers will have to wake up early. Enjoy breakfast before walking to the orphanage. Sometimes, you can reach the orphanage before breakfast and help the kids prepare for school. After you drop them to the school, enjoy your breakfast and relax before the kids come back from school. You’ll be busy with the children in the afternoon.

Sample of activities that you’ll perform:

  • Teach the children for 2-3 hours a day according to demand. During exam time, you’ll probably have to teach little more. You’ll also have to help them finish homework. In schools in Nepal, the children usually end up with lots of homework. If they can’t finish it, they’re usually punished. Prevent that from happening.
  • Personal hygiene: help the children brush teeth, shower them and change them into clean clothes.
  • Drop off and pick up from school
  • Organize fun activities like games, drawing, singing, dancing, and other creative activities
  • Educational tours, time permitting, take children on a educational tours
  • Help in administrative work, e.g. help in kitchen, office work
  • Help in other activities or programs designed for kids (If any)
