In Nepal, English is the language used in trade, commerce and communication. Therefore, lack of adequate knowledge of the English language can hamper a child’s career choice in the future. Although there are schools in Nepal to serve this purpose, there aren't enough resources to provide all children with a quality education. Most of the schools depend on volunteers from abroad for teaching English to students. You can contribute by teaching English in such schools. As a volunteer, you will basically teach English classes, converse with the students in English and impart language skills. This can also be your opportunity to gain some hands-on experience in teaching and building your career

Your activities as a volunteer
The size of the class is usually around 20 to 35 students. You will teach English 2-3 hours a day from Sunday to Friday. You might also be asked to train local teachers and take part in other activities like games, painting, music, sanitation, computers and arts. Most schools in Nepal follow fixed courses for teaching English. You’re welcome to teach extra also.
Project skills required:
Prior experience in teaching English is desired but not required. You’ll need to have sound communication skills in English. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated and have a strong willingness to learn and take initiative.
Meal/Accommodation/Support
Volunteer Alliance Nepal manages your entire accommodation, food and supervision during your stay. You will stay either with a host family or in a home base. In the home base, you’ll share a room with other volunteers and use communal toilets. You’ll be served three meals a day. Meals in the home base can be local or continental. With a host family, you’ll have a room for yourself and will be served 3 local meals a day. Staying with a host family provides you with a wonderful opportunity to experience Nepali life. You can even learn to cook Nepali food. Our staffs will visit you at your placement every two weeks. During the visit, we will check on your progress and make sure you’re satisfied.
Your life as a volunteer in Nepal
As soon as your plane lands at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you’ll find us at your service. One of our staff members will be there waiting for you preferably holding a placard with your name. For this, all you need to do is send us your flight itinerary at least four weeks prior to your departure. In case of delayed flights, please go directly to our contact hotel, the details of which will be given in your placement sheets. Alternatively, you can call our coordinators. The telephone numbers of our country coordinator and emergency contacts will be there in your pre-departure guidebook too.
After you've settled in, we’ll provide a two week long orientation program where you’ll be familiarized with the language and culture of Nepal. During this time, you’ll also go around cities like Kathmandu and Chitwan participating in cultural shows, visiting museums, going rafting, on jungle safaris or bird watching.
Afterward, you’ll be placed in your preferred project. During this time, you’ll stay either with the host family or a hostel as per your choice. Undoubtedly, the projects as well as accommodation will be perfectly safe. You’ll be provided with local meals three times a day. If traditional Nepali food doesn’t appeal to you, you’re welcome to buy your own food and prepare it. Volunteers can reach our coordinator at any time. They are ready to support you whenever you need them. We also conduct regular supervision/meetings when we visit our volunteers every 2 weeks to make sure that things are going good for them.
