Environmental Conservation/Eco Work Project-Nepal

Forests are a valued resource in Nepal, but deforestation is rapidly destroying much of the country's wooded areas. Growth of human settlements, need for fuel and industrialization are responsible for this rate of destruction. Many non-governmental organizations are taking initiative as a result.

Our organization has started a village nursery in a rural village of Chitwan to provide its input towards addressing the issue of deforestation in Nepal. In the nursery, volunteers prepare seedlings of different plant species and distribute them for free to local villagers and schools. Volunteers participate in awareness campaigns and village cleaning programs as well.

Your activities as a Volunteer

Work in the nursery includes seed collection, sowing, mulching, watering, trimming, weeding, and various other chores. The nursery produces seedlings that are later distributed for free to local schools, communities, and villagers, all to be planted in community fields. The coordinator will guide you during the project period. Volunteers’ efforts and contributions will create a positive impact on nature and promote environmental conservation in Nepal.

Project Skills Required:

This project may require physical strength, so volunteers should be in good health. Prior conservation experience is desired but not compulsory. We expect our volunteers to be flexible, enthusiastic, patient and open minded individuals.

Meal/Accommodation/Support

Volunteer Alliance Nepal manages your entire accommodation, food and supervision during your stay. You will stay either with a host family or at a home base. In the home base, you’ll share a room with other volunteers and use communal toilets. You’ll be served 3 meals a day. Meals in the home base can be local or continental. In the host family, you’ll have a room for yourself and will be served three local meals a day. Staying with a host family provides you with a wonderful opportunity to experience Nepali life. You can even learn to cook Nepali food. Our staffs will visit you every two weeks. During the visit, we will check on your progress and make sure you’re satisfied.

Your life as a volunteer in Nepal

As soon as your plane lands at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you’ll find us at your service. One of our staff members will be there waiting for you preferably holding a placard with your name. For this, all you need to do is send us your flight itinerary at least four weeks prior to your departure. In case of delayed flights, please go directly to our contact hotel, the details of which will be given in your placement sheets. Alternatively, you can call our coordinators. The telephone numbers of our country coordinator and emergency contacts will be there in your pre-departure guidebook too.
After you've settled in, we’ll provide a two week long orientation program where you’ll be familiarized with the language and culture of Nepal. During this time, you’ll also go around cities like Kathmandu and Chitwan participating in cultural shows, visiting museums, going rafting, on jungle safaris or bird watching.

Afterward, you’ll be placed in your preferred project. During this time, you’ll stay either with the host family or a hostel as per your choice. Undoubtedly, the projects as well as accommodation will be perfectly safe. You’ll be provided with local meals three times a day. If traditional Nepali food doesn’t appeal to you, you’re welcome to buy your own food and prepare it. Volunteers can reach our coordinator at any time. They are ready to support you whenever you need them. We also conduct regular supervision/meetings when we visit our volunteers every 2 weeks to make sure that things are going good for them.
