Since its establishment about 5 years back, Manabiya Nepal Orphanage has been providing a loving home, proper meal and education to orphaned and homeless children. The Orphanage is registered as a non-governmental, non-profit and social welfare organization. It has successfully educated and raised many children and currently houses 18 children.

Recently, the Orphanage shifted from a noisy, damp and less than ideal place to the outskirts of Kathmandu Valley in Budhanilkanta. The place is not only tranquil, there is no shortage of water and plenty of space exists for the children to sleep, eat, study and play. The Orphanage occupies the second and the third floor of the building, while a school operates on the ground and the first floor. This is an ideal setup for Manabiya Nepal Orphanage as the children don’t have to travel far to study. Previously, the children had to cross a very busy street to go to school and the staffs at the orphanage were very wary of this.

Why Manabiya Nepal Orphanage needs Volunteers

Manabiya Nepal Orphanage runs on the largesse of foreign donations. The rent the Orphanage pays on the current facility is provided by volunteers who had previously worked with them and were impressed with what the Orphanage was doing to the children. Had there been no volunteers, the orphanage would have folded its operations long time back.

The program fee that you pay goes into running the place. With it, the Orphanage can buy good food and give the children decent clothes to wear. Also, the love and the care you will provide will make the children feel loved and wanted. This is very important as most children have suffered from physiological trauma of separation from their parents and some are even unsocial and shun company.

You will help the children out in their studies also. Teach them English, an important subject that employers in Nepal demand their employees to speak and write fluently. You’ll also relieve the staffs of the Orphanage of some of their duties as you clean, feed and change clothes of the children. This is a perfect way to serve the humanity and help make lives of the children better.

Meal/Accommodation/Support

While working in Manabiya Nepal Orphanage, you will live in their building. If the room is occupied, you’ll stay with a host family. Both places, hostel or host family, are safe and clean. We will enjoy 3 local meals a day made locally. A typical Nepali food is dal (lentil soup), rice, vegetable curry and pickles.

Besides the bedrooms and toilets, Manabiya Nepal Orphanage also has a kitchen, a room where children eat and study, and a room where volunteers will stay. The director of the Orphanage will supervise the volunteers. If you need any other help, feel free to contact our Kathmandu office.

Daily life of Volunteers in Manabiya Nepal Orphanage

Volunteers will have to wake up early. Take breakfast with the children. You can also help to prepare the meal. You’ll also have to help the children prepare for school by helping them put on their clothes, making sure their teeth are brushed and dropping them to school.

Sample of activities that you’ll perform:
  • Teach the children for 2-3 hours a day according to demand. During exam time, you’ll probably have to teach little more. You’ll also have to help them finish homework. In schools in Nepal, the children usually end up with lots of homework. If they can’t finish it, they’re usually punished. Prevent that from happening.
  • Personal hygiene: help the children brush teeth, shower them and change them into clean clothes.
