Child Orphanage Nepal

Maharajgung, Nepal

Child Orphanage Nepal is located in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. It’s in a quiet neighborhood away from heavy traffic that Kathmandu suffers from. The orphanage was established 2 years back and aims to raise orphaned children and children from extremely poor background. The Orphanage provides education, shelter and nourishment and hopes to turn the children into mature and responsible citizens who can stand on their own feet and serve the country.

The director of the orphanage also believes in imparting spiritualism into children’s lives so that they can have an all round growth and treat other people with respect and courtesy.

Child Orphanage Nepal currently houses 7 children, all of them boys. The orphanage however is ready to take in more, especially girls. The facilities to accommodate them have already been built. There is a large separate room available for the girls to sleep and all the bunk beds and mattresses have arrived.

Why Child Orphanage Nepal needs Volunteers

Nepal is an extremely poor country. Most orphanages in Nepal struggle a great deal to run its program and feed the children and depend on foreign aid. Unless donation arrives, the expansion plans of the orphanages are constantly put on hold because funds saved for these projects have to be diverted back to feeding and educating the children. It’s a constant and never ending battle to run the orphanages.

Child Orphanage Nepal is no exception to this situation. It’s expensive to run Child Orphanage Nepal and the struggle to stay afloat is hard and difficult. There are areas where the Orphanage can save money but the cost of rent on the current facility as well as buy food, books, and clothes the children have to wear, all add up to the overall cost. There is no comprising on that.

Volunteers coming to work in the Orphanage will contribute their labor and also donate to the orphanage. You’ll be surprised how long way a single Dollar can go in Nepal. Through your program fee, which the Orphanage receives, it can take good care of the children.

Plus, the time you spent caring, loving and educating the children will help these kids a great deal. For instance, in Nepal the demand to speak and write in English is exponential. People’s careers often take a downward spiral or an upward climb as of result of their ability to speak and write in English. Help them grasp English, turn them decent English speakers, and they’ll take it on from there and achieve their ambitions.

Give the children in the Orphanage plenty of love. They are short of it as they’ve separated from the parents early in their lives. Many children still have physiological trauma of separation. Giving them love and making them feel loved will make the traumas disappear. This is a perfect volunteer project for you if you wan to serve humanity and make children’s lives better.

Meal/Accommodation/Support

While working in Child Orphanage Nepal, you will stay inside the orphanage. If the room is occupied, you’ll stay with a host family. Both the place, hostel or host family is safe and clean. We will enjoy 3 local meals a day made locally. Typical Nepali food is dal (lentil soup), rice, vegetable curry and pickles.

Besides the bedrooms and toilets, CC also has a kitchen, a room where children eat and study, and a room where volunteers will stay. The director of the orphanage will supervise the volunteers. If you need any other help, contact our Kathmandu office.

Daily Life of Volunteers in Child Orphanage Nepal

Volunteers will have to wake up early. Enjoy breakfast before walking to the orphanage if you’re living with a host family. If you leave in the orphanage, you’ll eat with the children. You can also help to prepare the meal. You’ll also have to help the children prepare for school by helping them change into school uniform, making sure they brush their teeth and dropping them to school.

Sample of activities that you’ll perform:

  • Teach the children for 2-3 hours a day according to demand. During exam time, you’ll probably have to teach little more. You’ll also have to help them finish homework. In schools in Nepal, the children usually end up with lots of homework. If they can’t finish it, they’re usually punished. Prevent that from happening.
  • Personal hygiene: help the children brush teeth, shower them and change them into clean clothes.
  • Drop off and pick up from school
  • Organize fun activities like games, drawing, singing, dancing, and other creative activities
  • Educational tours, time permitting, take children on a educational tours
  • Help in administrative work, e.g. help in kitchen, office work
  • Help in other activities or programs designed for kids (if any)
